Title: ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN PART 1: DEVELOPING AN ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL NETWORK NURS 6003
Nursing is one of the most intriguing professions in the health industry but students enrolling in the career are usually baffled by what they might expect when pursuing the course. Often, nursing students lack adequate information about the profession in their early instances of learning but as they progress in studies, they acquire additional information and guidance regarding the career (Roodbol & Peters, 2020). In order for nurses to successfully complete their program, they need academic and professional support. These provide avenue for professional interaction and networking to enhance knowledge sharing in the course of studies (Mesquita et al., 2017). As I transition to graduate students, I have also realized the benefits of academic and professional support as a way to optimize interactions for my future career as a family nurse practitioner. In this regard, this paper will help me organize my thoughts by enumerating academic and professional networks who will not only lay a foundation for my studies but also enhance my nursing care practice within a health setting.
NETWORK MEMBER 1
Name: Judi Kuric, RN, DNP, FNP
Title: Program Director
Organization: Walden University
Academic or Professional: Academic
Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
Notes: Dr. Kuric prides on an experience of more than 35 years in nursing as well as an advanced practitioner for over 25 years. She has also been teaching specialties in family nurse practice, emergency nursing and gerontology nursing at Walden University. Dr. Kuric has been part of my academic journey while I pursued an associate degree in nursing (ADN) earlier back. Her instructional strategies are outstanding and therefore she is quite an inspiration in building my future career. She once counseled me about the ADN program especially when I struggled in attaining the recommended scores in the sub-module units and her amazing guidance motivated me not to quit the course. Other than her academic and counseling prowess, Dr. Kuric is well-versed with the academic structure of Walden University. I therefore look upon her for further advice on how nursing environment operates within the university and I will consult her more about existing nursing programs that I can participate in to build my future career in the course of studies (Ling & Casida, 2020). With her specialty in family nursing, I anticipate to garner more insights about the profession and build confidence by reading her published articles within the university library.

course (Ryan, 2017). I purpose to team up with colleagues in the nursing school to optimize my understanding based on the knowledge shared by other students as they learn from me as well. We will work in group discussions in handling individual and group assignments as provided by course tutors. Besides, MSN colleagues will be vital in discussing issues and overcoming challenges arising in the course of my study (Comunale, Lerch & Reynolds, 2021). Notwithstanding, fellow course-mates will provide a support system of professional networking for future prospects and to enable us secure gainful employment upon completing MSN program. I therefore look forward to build a strong relationship with MSN colleagues in the Walden University.

Name: Tegist Ayalew, RN, MSN, FNP
Title: Staff Nurse
Organization: Hennepin Healthcare Clinic, Minneapolis
Academic or Professional: Professional
Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
Notes: While enrolling for an MSN program, students need immense information about the profession in terms of workplace responsibilities and opportunities for future growth. The most people students can liaise with are those already in the profession practicing the role one is studying (Mesquita et al., 2017). In this regard, I find Dr. Ayalew very instrumental in matters research and information regarding my MSN program. Her broad experience in family nursing will be crucial to help me learn about matters happening in practice as well as the emerging issues in the specialty that one can build more knowledge on (Ling & Casida, 2020). Besides, I purpose to build professional network with her for future job prospects as a FNP upon graduating.
NETWORK MEMBER 4
Name: Pratt Winterbottle, MSN, FNP
Title: Nursing Association (ANA) member
Organization: American Nursing Association (ANA)
Academic or Professional: Professional
Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
Notes: Nursing is one of the health career readily regulated by professional bodies to ensure compliance with operational standards of care of practice. I have a conviction that joining these professional organizations, especially the American Nursing Association, will allow me to provide best care to patients in a diverse setting (Comunale, Lerch & Reynolds, 2021). However, these professional associations have rigid terms that potential members must adhere to before enrolling with the organizations. As a student pursuing MSN program, I need information about the professional and academic demands of ANA as I view it as one of the umbrella body upon which all nurses in America register with (Roodbol & Peters, 2020). I find Dr. Winterbottle the best person to consult as she is already registered and also work in the organization. I look forward to consult her on matters of registration and compliance in order to enhance my practice in the health industry.
Conclusion
Professional networking provides social linkages in which a nurse can use to improve academic knowledge and build a foundation for future career development. Building this network commences when one enrolls in a nursing program and also during professional practice as both avenues lay a foundation for social interactions. As I pursue MSN program in Walden University, I purpose to build both academic and professional networks by collaborating with members discussed above as well as improving interactions with other professionals in my area of study. I believe that their guidance will help me address challenges in my career as well as seek required support system that can optimize my future practice as a family nurse practitioner.

NETWORK MEMBER 3
Name: Jessica Burgan
Title: RN/MSN/NP
Organization: American Nursing Association (ANA)
Academic or Professional: Professional
Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse
Notes: when learning and in practice, nurses should network with like-minded individuals with different nursing skills. Due to the dynamic nature of the ever-evolving health profession, networking with association members will be pivotal in enabling me to be more aware of practice issues and what to do during the MSN program in order to become an excellent nursing professional. Nursing associations advance personal development of members and are committed to the growth of nursing profession (Gaines, 2019; Morin, 2021). They offer information and resources difficult to get from other sources. I will use my network with Jessica for mentorship, career advice, and better understanding of health issues in today’s society.
I have been a Registered Nurse for just over 12 years. I have worked in various fields such as Rehab, Home Health and Dialysis. I have recently joined a team in the Electroconvulsion Therapy department on our Behavioral Health side of the hospital. I have always wanted to give more back to the community I live in. I also have always wanted to set a great example for my children. In 2012, my husband was in a tragic vehicle accident leaving behind a 5-year-old and a 1-year-old. I knew that if I constantly lived a positive life and set regular goals for myself and obtain them in front of my children, they could see that anything you desire and dream for can come true with hard work and perseverance. I completed by Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2018. I have regularly looked into programs to find the best fit for my busy schedule of now 2 growing children with active sports. Being that I am a single mother I find it important that my children can depend on me to be present. I came across Walden University because it is in a neighboring state of mine. I reached out to a colleague of mine from nursing school who attended Walden. She highly recommended the program and stated that she felt prepared and ready with her CNP after completion of the program.
I spoke with the enrollment specialist multiple times before accepting. Every question I had she answered readily with insightful recommendations. The Mission statement at Walden University has resonated with me but the Vision statement is what really had me at the point where I knew this is the right college for me. It states ‘… the contributions of nursing, health, and related sciences will transform the provision of nursing services along the continuum of care and across the human life span to meet the needs of individual’s and local and global communities.” Nursing is changing and evolving all this time. I find it important to stay up to date on new studies, best practices and improved quality of care. Being a nurse does not stop at the facility we work for. It is a profession that encompasses you. Whether its at the grocery store, your kid’s baseball game, or driving along the road. We are nurses and we are always changing and learning to better provide for our community.
Incorporation of Social Change
It is imperative that nurses maintain health relationships through social networking. Nurses are the front lines of social interactions with patients, patient families and other individuals within our community. It provides outlets to advance career placement and introduces individuals to others means of learning opportunities that they might not have been able to experience without social interaction. As stated in the article by (Schmidt, 2018; University, 2018) “this professional contact may never lead to an actual job, but instead serve as an invaluable resource for knowledge that can be instrumental in advancing the nurse’s career.” As for myself, I have not given much thought as to where this new career might take me but I do know that I will provide excellent care in an ever-changing career through the help at Walden University.

Good job with this first assignment – I appreciate your effort.
I have been a psych nurse for 4 years now, aiding individuals with mental health challenges to navigate life. My experience with these patients has impacted my decision to go back to school. My goal is to become a nurse practitioner with specialization in psych. I chose to become a psych NP to broaden my area of expertise. Also, I believe that this would lead to multiple job opportunities in different fields. Additionally, the knowledge gained would enable me to positively impact others, especially patients battling with mental health disorders.
I agree with Walden University’s view on social change; “Walden supports social change through the development of principled, knowledgeable and ethical scholar practitioners, who are and will become civic and professional role models by advancing the better of society”. In line with this, I intend to effect social change through my profession by applying my past work experiences and the knowledge to be acquired from this course in all areas of activity.
Professional networking in nursing plays an important role in finding jobs and career development. This will help me get involved and engage with like-minded people with the same struggles and ambitions and gain insight into our ever changing profession. Networking will help me develop and improve my skill set, remain abreast with the latest trends in health care, meet prospective mentors, partners and clients. Networking will help me gain access to necessary resources that will foster my career development.
Finally, it is expected that this program will equip me with the necessary knowledge to become proficient in the academic aspect of the nursing profession. With the MSN qualification, I would expect to acquire the ability to review and professionally critique literature in the field of nursing and contribute to advancement in nursing.
