Assignment  Leading a Culture of Excellence Essay

Introduction

Delivery of great service tends to be a vision in almost all organizations. The approach not only benefit the recipients of services but also provide a competitive differentiator for a prospect in a given industry (Owens et al., 2017). In health sector, provision of high standards care guarantee quality outcomes to patients in addition to improving the reputation of the care facility in a given location. Improved health services to patients is implemented through creating a culture of excellence in a care facility whereby client satisfaction is optimized with regard to different ailments presented in the institution (Schulingkamp & Latham, 2015). However, driving a culture of excellence in a care facility is a daunting task since behaviors and actions of stakeholders as well as patients must be realigned with emerging changes affecting the healthcare industry. Besides, the current practice of value-based care necessitates a cultural improvement and this requires prior planning to nurture excellence in an organization.

The present article examines the concept of leading a culture of excellence in an organization. Organizational practices that nurtures a culture of excellence will be elaborated by using an example of Chamberlain College of Nursing. Three leadership strategies that inculcates a culture of excellence in a health institution will be explored to provide insights on the evidence of implementation.

Characteristics of a Culture of Excellence

High standards of health care services are expected by patients and their surrogates with regard to any aliment presented in a given hospital. Creating a culture of excellence in a care facility is vital to improve satisfaction and outcomes to patients (van et al., 2017). In a health setting, a culture of excellence occurs when the facility implements organization-wide approach in which every care provider pursues measurable improvements that guarantee quality outcomes to patients. With the new era of health service delivery, care facilities need to examine all aspects in the organization in order to incorporate changes which care providers can implement to improve patient satisfaction. According to Al Rahbi, Khalid and Khan (2017), a culture of excellence is a management philosophy that requires stakeholders to lead an organization towards achieving shared vision and values in the prospect.

In health setting, culture of excellence is characterized by enhanced performance in all approaches of care delivery. As per this context, health professions are tasked with designing experiences that improve patient and provider satisfaction through creating a culture of safety. However, for this to happen, the organization need to provide shared goals, values and vision which acts a fulcrum for all employees to follow (Schulingkamp & Latham, 2015). Often, positive values in provides a benchmark for the implementation of activities in the prospect and also allows workers to strive towards excellence and quality care. Hospitals that embrace a culture of excellence also create an opportunity of collaboration among staffs to facilitate sharing of skills during delivery of care services (Owens et al., 2017). However, leadership in an organization should create a culture of excellence to enable employees to follow the mission and vision of the prospect.

Mission, Vision, and Values of the Selected Organization

Chamberlain University is one of the institutions of learning that embraces a culture of excellence for the benefit to the members of staff and to the student population. Through its College of Nursing, the facility provides a learning culture and environment that have a significant and a positive impact to the nurses graduating from the center of learning. The success of the college has made it a preferred institution by students aspiring to pursue nursing course. The institution is defined by the following concept map.

Members of faculty and students at the Chamberlain University are exposed to a culture of excellence which improves the quality of learning. At the institution, students learn concepts of care and service delivery on a daily basis and this provides an opportunity for them to internalize nursing procedures essential for patient care. The philosophy of the institution related to a culture of excellence are defined by three pillars which include “caring for ourselves,” “caring for colleagues,” and “caring for students.” The model enable staff and students to recognize how the organization promotes value of nursing excellence for them to emulate the same in order to achieve the mission of the institution (Al Rahbi, Khalid & Khan, 2017). Nonetheless, the Chamberlain Care Framework focus on person, nursing, health as well as environment of care and with this, it provides an avenue for nurses graduating from the institution to provide holistic care to patients.

Leading a Culture of Excellence

According to van et al. (2017), embracing a culture of excellence requires leaders to provide a conducive environment that guarantee safety to all stakeholders in an organization. In this context, senior stakeholders should emulate servant leadership and incorporate the views of followers in the prospect. Promoting inclusivity in an organization conforms to Chamberlain’s Care Model that focus on care for self. In this context, emphasis will be given to the rights of all stakeholders so that they assume the liberty to utilize potentials of their professionalism.

Adequate communication serves to be an important leadership strategy to inculcate a culture of excellence in an organization. Owens et al. (2017) postulate that communication is a framework used to provide operational guidelines in a prospect. The strategy is relevant to Chamberlain’s Care Model as it enhances self-discovery of information and also provides peers and clients with information relevant for an organization.

Collaboration among team members is a vital leadership strategy that nurtures a culture of excellence in an organization. Through this approach, leadership is rooted in trust among followers to ensure that opinions from all stakeholders is treated with dignity and respect in order to propel the organization to greater heights (Schulingkamp & Latham, 2015). The strategy can be used to improve safety and care quality to patients as provision of health services is shared among professionals.

Assignment: Leading a Culture of Excellence Essay Conclusion

A culture of excellence is vital for the success of an organization. The premise motivates stakeholders to optimize quality of

outcomes in order to improve satisfaction to clients. However, fostering a culture of excellence tends to be complicated as it requires stakeholders to emulate dignity, respect and compassion as they provide care to patients. Most importantly, a culture of excellence is anchored on the mission and vision of a care facility as this lays a framework for practice. Based on this argument, organizations need to take a keen interest during the formulation of the mission and vision of the prospect to provide a suitable avenue for future success.
