Title: NUR 513 Benchmark – Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations Paper Essay

With the current significantly increasing number of patients, healthcare specialists are needed more than before. Consequently, to promote the quality and safety of care provided, registered nurses are encouraged to take their careers to the next level by considering a master’s degree that can help broaden their scope of practice (Mueller et al., 2020). Despite the numerous career paths, one can pursue with a master’s degree in nursing, as an acute care nurse practitioner, taking on the adult gerontology nurse practitioner is an outstanding decision to make a difference in healthcare (Wolff-Baker & Ordona, 2019). As such, this paper illustrates the scope of my future role as an acute care AGNP, in addition to the role of professional organizations in advancing nursing practice.

The Scope of Your Future Role as an Advanced Registered Nurse

AGNPs can be said to hold responsibility between physicians and RNs. They can assess, diagnose and manage patients with complex conditions independently. Acute care AGNPs attend to critically ill patients or those with chronic conditions. Some of the outlined responsibilities of an AGNP include conducting physical examinations, collecting and interpreting screening tests, diagnosing patients, developing a care plan, and prescribing medication (Muench et al., 2020). Appropriate critical thinking, interpersonal, and communication skills are needed to execute the above roles. As reported by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) an AGNP can work in an outpatient hospital, community health center, long-term care facility, or a private clinic among other healthcare facilities (Mueller et al., 2020).

To become an acute care AGNP, one needs to earn a nursing degree or BSN which normally takes four years to accomplish. Both degrees enable the nursing student to become an RN. However, upon completion of the degree program, the nursing graduate will be required to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses to ensure foundational nursing knowledge and skills (Wolff-Baker & Ordona, 2019). Most registered nurses start working once they have received their practice license. However, some choose to advance their career straight away by enrolling in an MSN program. Some graduate programs may however require RN experience to qualify for admission. The MSN program usually takes two years, educating students on high-level topics like pathophysiology, pharmacology, and health assessment among others. The MSN in acute care AGNP is required to meet the standards of several professional agencies such as the American Nursing Association (ANA) and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF).

NUR 513 Benchmark – Future Scope Role and Professional Obligations Paper Essay
Professional Nursing Organizations

Some of the most beneficial resources for AGNPs include the American Association of Nursing Practitioners (AANP), the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA), and the American Nurse Association (ANA). The AANP mainly focuses on ensuring high-quality care as the responsibility of nurse practitioners (NP) (Thomas, 2021). The organization provides resources for undergraduate nursing students and active nurse practitioners. The main goal of the organization is to empower current nurse practitioners and enable nursing students to acquire adequate knowledge, advance their careers, and become leaders in healthcare (Peacock et al., 2022). AANP members enjoy huge discounts on nursing tools, access to research networks, and free educational courses. AANP is also involved with advocacy and promoting the roles of NPs through legislative changes.

The ANA on the other hand was founded in 1896, and currently represents millions of RNs across different states in many different positions (Muench et al., 2020). The organization advocates for RNs at both federal and state legislative levels. ANA is also part of the group providing NP certification “the American Nurses Credentialing Centre.” Finally, the GAPNA is responsible for offering a professional community for all NPs who are specialized in providing care for the adult population (Peacock et al., 2022). The organization published scholarly journals among other resources like an online library and toolkits to help promote knowledge and skills in the care for adults. Nursing students are allowed to join and enjoy the advantages of the career center. There are normally two GAPNA conferences every year, which members can attend including the pharmacology conference and the general annual conference.

American Association of Nursing Practitioners (AANP)

To promote my professional career as an acute care AGNP, I find the AANP most appealing. Becoming part of the AANP provides NPs with a real opportunity to make a significant difference in advancing their career and promoting the health of the community. AANP’s main mission is to empower all nursing practitioners to advance person-centered, accessible, high-quality, and equitable care to the diverse patient population through education practice research, advocacy, and leadership (Thomas, 2021). This mission is in line with the “worldview” or “philosophy of life” as it reinforces promoting equitable delivery of quality care services to all Americans irrespective of their gender or race (Peacock et al., 2022). Consequently, as advocates for patients, the AANP also helps NPs promote patient education to enhance appropriate self-care skills, as demonstrated by the “Philosophy of Care.” To advance nursing practice, the AANP provides members with quality CE activities at affordable rates, updated news on current healthcare topics, advocacy and the state and national level, and finally, adequate resources required in promoting professional growth.

Controversial or Evolving Issue

Recently, the report made by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) attacking the growing NP’s roles in meeting the care needs of new Americans who will be receiving care under the Affordable Care Act, was criticized by the California Association for Nurse Practitioners (CANP). The report claims that having NPs with greater roles in the provision of patient care would lead to a “two-tier” healthcare system (Peacock et al., 2022). However, due to the increased number of ACA beneficiaries, NPs are required to play more critical roles in meeting the care needs of these patients. The legislation that was backed by Senator Ed Hernandez, SB 1524, is intended to give NPs more responsibility in prescribing drugs and medical services immediately after attaining their license, even without a collaborative agreement with the physician.

The attempt made by the AAFP to limit NPs’ abilities in exhibiting their full potential of knowledge and experience gained through education and practice will greatly affect the accessibility of care services for Californians, especially the ACA beneficiaries (Niran Al-Agba & Bernard, 2020). The legislature, however, has made tremendous efforts in ensuring that more community members receive affordable and high-quality care services which can only be achieved when NPs are considered equal partners in the healthcare team assigned to the patient. Study findings reported by Haney and Sen. Hernandez highlighted a contrary to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine recommendations on limiting the roles of NPs. The reported findings which are published in the Journal of American Medicine demonstrate that there was an equal patient outcome in terms of quality and safety of care services by NPs and physicians (Moldestad et al., 2020). As a result, all licensed NPs by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) and those who have perused higher education such as MSN and doctorate, should exhibit the full potential of their scope of practice, including prescriptive authority, just like physicians, to promote community health in the future.

Conclusion

Registered nurses play a significant role in meeting patients’ healthcare needs and promoting the overall health of the community. With the increasing complexity of the disease, and increased patient numbers, more specialized and adequately trained nurses are needed. Nurses are also encouraged to advance their careers to expand their scope of practice and attend to more advanced patient needs. Several resources are available for RNs to join and advance nursing practice. As an acute care NP, joining the AANP is quite important to advance my career and advocate for patients in promoting equitable, accessible, and high-quality care services to the diverse patient population.

The advanced practice registered nurse or APRN position has steadily grown in importance in the United States. This is because the role that they play in plugging the gap between physicians and the population is immense. It is a common fact that the number of physicians practicing is virtually inversely proportional to that of the population they are supposed to be serving. To become an advanced practice nurse, one must complete a rigorous accredited postgraduate course in their specialty. This postgraduate degree is currently recommended to be a PhD as the entry level to practice. NUR 513 – Benchmark – Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations Paper. After meeting these educational requirements, the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) for instance has then to be certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Centre (ANCC) (ANCC, N.D.) and receive licensure to practice from the State in which they intend to practice. The role APRNs have come to play has become quite significant, given the fact that .

Nursing remains a dynamic and evolving profession with a wide range of boundary-less opportunities. Career prospects in the profession define the scope of practice as practitioners can specialize in different lines of care. Nurse informatics is specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information and analytical sciences with the aim of identifying, defining, managing and communicating data, information, knowledge and best practice interventions in healthcare (Pearson, 2017). The scope of practice for informatics nurses include combining nursing practice and technology and assimilation and dissemination of data for effective decision-making for practitioners. Nursing informatics includes various tools like electronic health records, and electronic medical record systems that are organized to deliver health information about patient care.

Nursing informatics is essential in the future role of advanced registered nursing practice as its scope is robust with far-reaching and current care practices. Nursing informatics entails the implementation of evidence-based practice interventions and leveraging patient health information to make informed care decisions and disseminate relevant data to different care providers to enhance inter-professional collaboration (Oldland et al., 2018). Nursing informatics provides a framework for advanced practice nurses to implement documentation in clinical systems and develop new healthcare delivery models for different patient populations. Advanced registered nurses that specialize in informatics develop an in-depth understanding of the design and organizational aspects of the industry, particularly through the focus on currents issues.

In order to specialize in nursing informatics, one needs to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) although a master’s degree gives an added advantage. The nurse should also possess certification in nursing informatics to implement clinical information systems. Nurses specializing in the area should hold academic credentials from Certified Professional in Healthcare Information Management System (CAHIMS). Another credential organization is Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS). Additionally, the nurse should have clinical experience and have understanding of federal requirements and healthcare standards (Woo et al., 2018). Nurses specializing in informatics require credentials from the American Nurse Credentialing Center to get the scope practice standards. They should also have in-depth understanding of different federal laws like the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to have insights on the safety regulations to protect medical and patient information.  NUR 513 Benchmark – Future Scope, Role, and Professional Obligations Paper Essay

Three Professional Nursing Organizations Influential in Advancing Scope and Advanced Nursing

Professional organizations are important for advanced practice nurses as they enable them have effective understanding of the healthcare environment, improve their skills, and be aware of trends impacting the nursing practice and care delivery.  Nurse informaticists should be a component of these entities since the organizations develop practice standards, code of ethics frameworks and provide a platform for many and advocacy means focused on policy changes. The organizations provide an opportunity for informatics nurse to express their issues, concerns and apply evidence-based practice approaches to care delivery in their settings. Nurses lobby for a host of issues that include changes in policy and regulatory changes at both state and federal level, more access to healthcare by populations, affordable and quality care for diverse patient populations. These organizations also help nurses in exchanging and sharing ideas to improve care practice and professional development.

Three critical or prominent professional organizations for informatics nurses include the American Nurses Association (ANA), the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Established in 1896, the American Nurses Association (ANA) has membership in 50 states and is the largest voice of the nursing profession. The association is designed to assist nurses foster excellent practice standards, promote a safe and ethical work environment, bolster nurses’ health and wellness and advocate for their issues. The association assists nurses to get to their highest potential through training and education (ANA, n.d).
