The enactment and implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) 2010 implored providers to leverage empirical evidence to enhance quality of care, affordability, and accessibility. Research and application of evidence-based practice (EBP) increased tremendously as providers leveraged existing research-backed evidence to attain ACA’s goals. EBP entails the use of conscientious, problem-solving approach in clinical setting or practice. At the core of EBP is integration of best research evidence that incorporates patient preferences in clinical care and decision making by providers and organizations. The qualities of EBP include enhancement of quality care, improvement of patient outcomes, lowering the cost of care, and empowering providers to make better care decisions (Laureate Education, 2018). Therefore, EBP qualities are similar to Quadruple Aim of health care. The Joint Commission (TJC) is an organization that promotes and deploys EBP in its different activities based on information from its website.
The Joint Commission is an autonomous nonprofit whose activities include accrediting and certifying over 20,000 health care organizations as well as programs in the U.S. and even outside it. The organization is considered an international symbol of quality whose accreditation and certification demonstrate a provider’s commitment to satisfying certain performance and quality standards. These standards embrace quality, improved access, affordability, and welfare of the providers. The standards focus on patient safety like the National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) that the organization reviews each year. These goals allow organization to benchmark best practices to enhance quality and affordable care to patients (The Joint Commission, 2021). The implication is that these standards are founded and grounded in EBP framework.
The website’s mission statement which is “to improve health care for the public through collaboration with other stakeholders and evaluation of healthcare organizations to inspire them in excelling in provision of safe and effective care of the best quality and value.” The organization’s vision statement also demonstrates EBP as it asserts that “all individuals should experience safest, highest quality, and value-based in all settings.
The Joint Commission’s activities are well anchored in EBP as illustrated through the provision of rationale for every National Patient Safety Goal. For instance, the Goal for Preventing Infection provides a rationale based on evidence from research studies. Through this approach, the commission can benchmark healthcare organizations and providers for best practices to enhance quality, value, and accessibility (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). The commission publishes extensive collection of accreditation guidelines, books and periodicals to ensure that organizations use best practices in care delivery.
After conducting an evaluation of The Joint Commission’s website, I would say that it has altered my perspective about the entity. Prior to the research, I never thought that the organization is grounded in EBP. However, I understand now that TJC is a critical player in advancing EBP framework and the Quadruple Aim as advanced by the Institute of Health.

The World Healthcare Organization (WHO) is a healthcare organization whose work is grounded in evidence-based practice. They manage and maintain a wide range of data related to global health and bring the world’s scientist together to accelerate research. They promote best practice and standards for emergency operations and public response to public health emergencies. They work for the greater good of all people, globally. The WHO’s commitment to healthcare excellence and scientific evidence is continually improving and advancing to reflect the changes in the world. The WHO uses diversity, professionalism, trust, and integrity to achieve the highest level of public health on a global scale (DNA, 2020). EBP is shown throughout the mission and vision of the World Health Organization, as they are focused on their commitment to excellence in health which is guided by evidence and technical expertise (WHO values charter, 2020).
Reading and learning more about The WHO has changed my perspective on the organization. I never realized how big their commitment is to global health. An example of such commitment is their Thirteenth General Program of Work (GPW 13). It is their 5-year strategy, 2019-2023 that focuses on their triple billion targets to show measurable impacts to people health at the country level. The triple billion targets include one billion more people having universal health coverage, one billion more people are protected from health emergencies, and one billion more people have better health and well-being. Measurable impact to global health is at the heart of the WHO’s mission to change and improve the future of public health (World health organization, 2021).

This organization was founded in 1991 and “utilizes the highest level of technology available to hospice industry ad full implementation of document imaging with custom scheduling tools for physicians and field staff.” (About Us, 2021). The patient can receive care at all times from registered nurses for symptom management or any needed questions.
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is warranted to have the best clinical outcomes and be the “true best” patient care. Often in healthcare, I reflect on what I would want for my loved ones and what expectations and needs would be sought after, that is, evidence-based practice. EBP should be the rule, not the exception or a choice for healthcare delivery. EBP “improves healthcare quality, reliability, and patient outcomes and reduces variations in care and costs, but it is still not the standard of care delivered by practicing clinicians across the globe” (Melnyk et al.,2014, p. 7). Upon evaluation of Seasons Hospice website, I discovered that within the vision and philosophy/goals of care, they have informed to “strive for excellence beyond accepted standards, and increase the communities awareness of hospice as part of the continuum of care.” They also discuss ensuring quality care with joint expertise that is dignified and elevates care to the next level (About Us, 2021). The company also wants to stress that it aims to be personalized and match the patients’ needs and family support. Throughout navigating the entire website in the organization, they do not clearly state that Seasons utilizes evidence-based practices. Still, when reading the vision, mission, and philosophy, the foundation of this organization is providing and defining evidence-based practice care.
This organization is grounded in EBP for the mission and vision/philosophy of the entire company encompasses the theory behind the evidence-based practice. They implement these throughout Seasons through the policies and procedures in place. Aligning the competencies needed for cultivating EBP within the organization ensures success and proper implementation, where patient-centered care focuses on teamwork and collaboration, quality improvement, and safety (Melnyk et al.,2014, p. 7 ). These components are aware throughout the website and are aimed and known for the reader to gather quickly about this particular organization.
Being such an established and founded organization, they have exceptional technological advancements that allow them to be highly skilled and modern to any available advances. According to Worldviews on EBP, the nursing part of EBP needs is the ability to have the resources and skills necessary to search for and appraise research evidence to implement in practice( Crabtree et al.,2016, p.172). The probability of success and the main reason EBP is paramount is when the team within the organization, including every discipline, is just as invested and involved in sharing the same care goals. Hospice has requirements for a meeting with the medical director, LPN, RN, Social worker, chaplain, and even family members can be invited to these meetings to discuss the patient plan of care, outcomes, and needs. It only leads me to firmly take a stance that this particular organization is grounded in EBP. I also found that they aim to educate the staff and have continuing education courses frequently for first-class education to better care and outcomes. There were positive correlations between EBP beliefs and EBP implementation in the study conducted–which CE courses are needed to have the competencies and skills necessary to make that correlation accurate (Sikka,2017).
Personally, having a background in hospice by working for a different organization within the field, I had a basis of knowledge regarding the type of care provided as a whole encompasses and requires to provide EBP. It truly is what brought me out of the hospital setting and more focused and seeking hospice care because it focuses on the reasons why I became a nurse in the first place. Ensuring I was giving the best optimal care possible and being a lifelong learner who put my patients and families first was essential to me. I always wanted to continue my research and ensure my patients’ safety at all times. I feel that hospice care is just that because EBP is followed in hospice care. In the hospital, it has become how fast you can get out of the room to the next patient and make sure that you get everything done on that checklist. Upon exploring this website, it is evident that this healthcare organization is complex and filled with quality care. Upon reading the countless testimonials, you can see the difference hospice makes to provide holistic care supporting through every stage during the end of life. Upon reading the website, it made me further become passionate about hospice and proud to be a hospice RN who can provide EBP care.
